It's quite simple really, Celstk855. Pour water down a hill, and you'll see that the water wants to take the easiest and quickest way to get to the bottom. It is the same in HT. You have a nice heat source that wants to move that heat to the coldest place possible in the shortest amount of time. As the heat moves up into the heatsink, it suddenly encounters these pipes filled with arctic silver. The silver has a much higher thermal conductivity than the rest of the heatsink, so the heat energy makes a right (or left) turn and most of it starts moving horizontally out the pipe until it reaches the end where it encounters the air blown down from the fan. Forced convection takes over and just like Elvis, the heat has left the building
