Most people prefer the NIC Modem. But the USB modem does have plenty of bandwith for Cable or DSL. So, either one works very well. I've tried my modem's USB port and it worked just as well as the Ethernet. Any NIC should do fine. A cheap D-Link or Linksys NIC will do the job nicely.
