Cisco has laid off thousands, Motorola has laid off some 20,000 in various divisions (I think), Intel cut a few, Dell cut some also, Agilent is ditching 4000, the combined HP and Compaq just dropped 13,000 as part of their consolidation, the list goes on.

Some of the Japanese powerhouses have cut as many as 30,000 positions in the past couple months.

AMD's announcement represents 15% of their workforce. Ugly, but not atypical.
