...for using Fileplanet as their primary source for HL updates and downloads.

YOU SHOULD NOT HAVE TO REGISTER WITH A THIRD PARTY, NOT EVEN AN AFFILIATED THIRD PARTY, TO DOWNLOAD SIMPLE UPDATES.

Period, end of story, door closed, uh...okay, I just ran out of hackneyed aphorisms. But anyway:

I went through the royal runaround trying to get the HL 1108 and CS 1113 patches, register at FP and then try to access the non-"personal server" sites, learn that I am in line behind 2100 other people with an expected wait of >3 hours. No thanks.

I finally located the two updates via Google and links it gave me to a couple other sites. Now I'm ready to shoot Valve! I ran the updates and everything "works", but every time I click on "Multiplayer Games" HL then reports that my executeable is out of date. Click "cancel" to bypass and then everything works, but it's an unnecessary hassle.

Voice comm -- I got it operational but for whatever reason it doesn't want to interface properly to my SBLive card: When I run the test utility, it picks up my voice but only in a clipped, garbled fashion. I fooled with every possible soundcard-related software setting in the Control Panel and still couldn't fix it. I updated the Live's drivers, no improvement. The strange thing is, the mic works just fine in normal Windows stuff; only the HL voice comm software is failing to operate properly.

Grrrrr...
