but my Western Digital 40GB sustains about 27MB/sec across a good portion of the drive, according to HD Tach (my previous 20GB was just a tad slower). It sounds like your setup may somehow limited by your hardware, not by your interface speed.

I have no direct experience with IDE-RAID so you might ask some of the others what they get for a sustained read.
