His post is long gone (I checked for it) but basically, in the beginning Be was developing a cool OS, driver support was limited but always improving, and a number of the pro audio companies were porting their software over to Be because it offered features a Windows platform simply could not match and an ease-of-use that far surpassed Linux.
Then Be decided to shift their core focus to the IA market. Even before the announcement was made, the BeOS product was already showing signs of languishing, including a driver support library that was no longer being properly updated, and when the free R5 came out (the one you can still download) in tandem with the IA announcement, the pro-audio companies pretty much withdrew from Be and focused back on other platforms.
Apparently the decision to go IA also cost Be a key software developer who wasn't happy with the new direction and took his talents elsewhere.
In other words, BeOS hasn't gotten anywhere because Be killed Be with a stupid management decision, and the market to which the company shifted fizzled out even BEFORE the brunt of the dot-bomb recession had kicked in.
