The setup program for Netscape that I've seen asks you if you want to make Netscape the default browser for each of several document types and protocols, all checked by default. If you don't uncheck them, it overrides all your previous settings, but it's easy enough to stop it. As far as the AOL desktop link, yes, that's a pissoff, but it's a link to a URL, not a program, so just delete it and it's gone completely.
