LapLink which is a program that sends files over many different devices may help you save the long file names. Only I have not seen the program for many many years now & I still believe it
been mentioned so is still around & updated.

I have not played with laptops at all, but I understand the HD controller is not straight forward IDE. I assume you have one laptop & you have a new HD in it, & your HD cable supports only one HD, if you have a floppy drive could you not have done a (sys C from a boot disk ?.

You have put limits on a very limited machine & if someone does have what you need it may not be cheap.
