I do have to disagree with you as all the first meg of ram can not be moved from the location they are at, this includes the ram under the BIOS's. The system still can not use this memory, only the unused memory around the BIOS. I have used this
unused memory plus the UMB (the 64k just above the first meg) for many many years now. The EMM386 was not aways around but there was shareware that could use this xtra memory, must be where MS got the idea from.

I would believe that systems are so fast now that
doing a shadow (video, BOIS, or whatever) that you would notice no real gain. But not that a shadow
would steal system resources or even the possibility to encounter errors.

Also BIOS is not just loaded then unused from that time on they are used all the time.
