Nvidia drivers make a fair bit of difference either 10.8 or 12.6 are currently hot and stable I am using the 10.8.

You should be able to get 2500 - 3000 without too much hassle, just a bit of tweaking. Do be aware the scores for 3DMark2000 are a different range to the scores for 3DMark2001, so a score of 2000 is not such a bad start for a freshly assembled system in 3DMark2001.

Also the Mad Onion boards are quite useful if you just scan other peoples requests for help.

Nvidia run faster in 16 bit.
1024x768 is default res for 3DMark anyhow.

Sisoft Sandra is full of helpful performance tweaks too if you can find a copy. Like naming HDD drives and setting IDE's to server mode and enabling DMA for all drives including CDROM. etc
