Had that sucker on '98 for a LONG time. Here we go!

NEVER install Win with the card in a slot!

but try this anyway...

shut down
remove card
boot to safe mode
delete all things vortex (there may be some leftover stuff as well from the card being detected as something else, get those too!)
reboot normal
delete all aureal references in Windows/inf/other and windows/inf
shut down
replace card
reboot

I've found it gets detected incorrectly during windows installs and it mucks up.

The 2048 drivers are the best I've had and I tried them all! Also on very fast machines (all of us!) setting the PCI Latency to 0 can solve problems.

I really like my card it would be a shame if you can't get it to go.

Also some of your descriptions sound suspiciously like bad RAM (doubtful if it's the Micron stuff but you never know).

Report back with your results as I've probably got some notes around here that may help.
