We here like AMD CPU's the best as they are as good or better then intels & saves you lots of money. Even with price drops the P4 cost way to much & needs the expensive RAM.
I have been where you are @ now except I already had a better video card & what I did instead of
upgrading the CPU only to a faster speed which back then Intel P3's cost alittle more & the added speed would not have done very much & I knew AMD CPU's were much better for playing 3D games so I dumped the intel MoBo & CPU, then added a new MoBo for AMD CPU's & a new TBird (there is a better AMD CPU now). It costed me alittle more this way, but I have a much better system from it all. My story is much longer then this as the old MoBo did not lay around to long before being used again.
Anyway if you are happy with your games for now
& a video card upgrade will fix you up then you maybe better off waiting till the next gen AMD CPU, there should be a big difference then then in the current top two AMD CPU's.
