You can buy a Pentium4, but in current applications it's very slow -- unless you exclusively use your computer to play Quake3.

You can buy a P3-1GHz, but it's a dead end solution. There will be no Coppermine P3's faster than 1GHz, and the upcoming Tualatin P3 most likely won't work in a current P3 motherboard.

Which leaves the obvious possibility of an Athlon at 1GHz or higher, with incredible overclocking potential, a lower price than either of Intel's offerings, better performance, and a future upgrade path
