I do the same thing with OpenBSD 2.8 on an old p133 with 48MB of ram.

It flies running dhcpd, ipnat, and ipfilter

But I'v found the same machine runs fine with X and WindowMaker (using FreeBSD 4.3). Just don't try to use KDE or Gnome...they are resource hogs.
