Chad,

As it has been said before, try the new cable
before gutting any of the machines for errors.

If you know someone who has a laptop with a cute
little PCMCIA network card, have them pop it into
one or the other machine, (once they change their
configuration to match your workgroup name, etc.)
Try one then the other to determine which desktop
has the problem.

I know what I did when I first started connecting
all these antique boxes together. I bought a used
10baseT hub and a handfull of radio shack pre-made
patch cables of Cat5.

Worked like a charm. (Cheap 4 port 100baseT hubs
sell at Staples for under 100 USD).
