I hope you're just doing this for the sake of a quick-and-dirty networked Starcraft game or something.
For file transfers, IT BITES. Way too slow.
Anyways, assuming you are running Windows, plug the two computers into each other via the null modem cable and then launch Direct Cable Connection on both machines --
Start Menu =>
Programs =>
Accessories =>
Communications =>
"Direct Cable Connection"
If you don't see it listed there, you need to install it from Windows setup.
