The built-in RAID controllers have 2 channels for 4 devices. If you have 2 devices on one channel, you must designate one as the master and the other as a slave, since only 1 device per channel can be active at any one time. The master will take precedence over the slave.

Even if the adapter let you stripe across 4 drives, you still could only have 2 of them working at a time.

That is why IDE RAID has not even touched SCSI RAID in server use. All devices on a SCSI chain can be active at the same time, so you can stripe across more drives.

Promise does make some SuperTrack controllers that have more channels, so they can stripe across more drives. However, they are PCI cards, and they're pretty expensive.
