This is in reference to the post below:

When you install linux for the first time have your computer plugged into the cable modem (with the modem turned on).

When you get to the part of the installation where it asks if you want to setup networking say yes...then have it run/search for a DHCP server.

It will automatically configure all IP's for you...hostname, netmask, gateway, etc. All you have to do is chose a computer name. Its easier than windows

I have done this hundreds of times with FreeBSD, OpenBSD, and ummm well ok yes I have used linux (go ahead and laugh). If it does not detect all your settings from the cable ISP then usually the problem is that your network card is not supported by your version on linux (distro).
