The real reason Intel needs other chipset makers is the contract with rambus ram as Intel can not make DDRam chipsets as the have to push RamBus ram. This contract hurt Intel & is still hurting them & will continue to do so with AMD doing so
well in Intels bad time bad time. Intels other investments are not doing so well either.

Just another point of view.
