Keep in mind Intel has been widely popular as a chipset vendor for many years. Motherboard makers have a lot more experience writing BIOS code for Intel chipsets.
And FWIW, Intel chipset choices are up in the air right now -- i820 was a disaster, and i815 has a 512MB memory limitation.
Board compatibility and stability is also a function of more than just the chipset, in addition to BIOS code the quality of the board layout, parts, and power supply circuitry is a majory contributing factor.
So don't be too quick to write off non-Intel chipsets, especially since VIA has nearly 50% of the market right now. Just do your homework before purchasing and always consult the one site that always has accurate information
