You can creat multiple partitions on a RAID array. I have 2 15 GB drives in RAID 0 to form a 30 GB logical drive. I have a 5 GB partition with my OS, and a 25 GB partition for storage. Whenever Win98 has to be reinstalled, I can reformat the 5 GB partition without losing anything on the 25 GB partition. If the Promise RAID controller goes out, though, both partitions will be useless until I hook the drives up to another Promise RAID controller. A standard IDE controller can't read data from the drives unless I completely reformat them and destroy my RAID array.

RAID works best with drives of identical size, but it will work with different sizes. If you have a 15 GB drive and a 20 GB drive, you can still stripe (level 0) them, but you will only get a 30 MB logical drive. If you mirror (level1) them, you will only get a 15 GB drive.
