hi. thank you very much. great stuff. i really feel like my questions been answered. if you're interested I got lot of background info at http://www.pcguide.com/ref/mbsys/cache/funcHow-c.html et.seq. it's pretty good but very dated. if i'm understanding all i've read, the old bottleneck was using tag ram to map addresses but the new computers use the cpu which can assign a very large number of ram addresses to each cache line without being limited by the tag ram's old 7-bit or 11-bit limit. it just amazes me. anyway, whether i'm rightly or wrongly understanding the mechanics, i definitely have enoungh to make an informed buying decision. thanks again. bye, roy
