nope, you did the right thing. Now, there is another possibility:

Boot into safe mode by holding down the F8 key when you turn on the computer until it shows you the dos options of booting normal, logged, safe mode etc. Select #3, safe mode and when you are up and running, go to the start button, settings, control panel, system, device manager and see whether you have any duplicates in the sound and game controllers. if you have those in duplicates, delete all entries and reboot. You may have to reinstall the sound drivers. That is all I can think of at the moment.
