(SAN JOSE) After a short New Year's truce, the processor war appears to be heating up again. Intel today showed off a 2GHz Pentium 4 processor, as well as the sequel to the Itanium processor.
Intel rolled out the CPUs during the opening keynote of its spring developer forum in San Jose.
The 2GHz Pentium 4 was air cooled and based on a 0.18-micron process. Intel plans to push the Pentium 4 to 2GHz within the next six months.
The company also made the first public demonstration of the McKinley processor. A 64-bit CPU for servers, McKinley was joint developed with Hewlett Packard and promises to offer significant performance increases over the initial version of the Itanium.
Intel officials also showed off a 0.13-micron processor using copper interconnects. Intel didn't disclose the speed of the 0.13-micron Pentium III processor, but the CPU made its appearance in a notebook, which may indicate that Intel will bring the 0.13-micron CPU to notebooks first.
The company said it has no plans to pull back despite signs of an economic downturn. Instead, the company will make $7.5 billion in capital investments and spend another 4.3 billion on R&D in the near term.
Intel also continued to push its "extended PC" philosophy, which calls for the PC to be a hub where people connect their MP3 players, digital cameras and digital video cameras.
