Remove a computer from the network permanently?

Hi, I have a WinNT 4.0 Network. I'm trying to name one of my servers JONES, the thing is it says during installation that the name already exists on the network, which of course it doesn't... However I remember that before my time there was a server that was named just that, could it be that somehow, somewhere the network still possess info on this old server? and if so, how do one go about removing that info permanently. (And don't say ´have you checked Server Manager´, I would take it as an insult... )
