and i agree about replacing the pad with compound. first thing i do to a sink is scrape the pad off with an expired phone card and use a drop of gumout to remove the residue. i've seen once and heard off a couple times, folks leaving the plastic on.
i know a guy who has built a few hundred pc's , and a couple of weeks ago, put a standoff in the wrong hole and shorted the mobo. he was in a hurry. i nearly always run a full post on the mobo, cpu, ram, and vid card outside the case on a bubble wrap antistatic bag before installing it in the case. not long ago i somehow fried a amd x5-133adz (fastest 486 ever made). no idea how it happened. could have been static. so i had to replace the chip and mobo with a tx mobo and pre mmx p133 that i had laying around. anyone that works on computers long enuf is gonna break somethin
