Opinions please, I am thinking about upgrading my PC and I would like your advice. I currently run a slot 1 PIII 600E (100 fsb, 256k) with 128 meg of PC133. My motherboard will support a 133 fsb with an 8x multiplier. I’m trying to decide if I should get a faster slot 1 PIII (933 to 1 GHz) or get a new motherboard with an AMD T-bird 1.0 GHz. The price for these two options is about the same. I don’t look forward to another motherboard upgrade but if the AMD performed significantly better than the PIII, I would consider it. The most demanding thing I use my PC for is gaming (Quake, Need For Speed, etc.) and audio recording and editing. As a side note, when I built this system I bought a “pretested overclock” cpu. I expected to be able to run the 600E PIII at 800 Mhz with a 133 fsb. When I change the fsb to 133, CMOS detects the chip as an 800E PIII and Windows will boot, but it locks up a minute or two later. I have good cooling, and I tried raising the CPU voltage 10% but it didn’t help. Thanks in advance. |
