assuming he does have a Slot-A version of the Tbird. The slot card has a number of chip-styled parts, and the CPU is soldered to the card, but a Slot-A Thunderbird is still a Thunderbird, on-die cache etc.

AFAIK some of the parts on the card do some translation work, though, because the classic Athlons (hence Slot A boards) use a slightly different signaling protocol than does the Tbird.
