You can do it direct with a proggie called PCLinq, and the correct USB cable. USB direct to USB, no hub, no network card, just pure USB.

I have it and it comes in handy for saving important stuff when redoing an OS installation on the road, I just hook up my laptop and start transferring the selected files for later reinsertion when completed.
